Somis is a rural community bordered by the cities of Moorpark and Camarillo. Ventura www.ventura-usa.com is about 20 minutes to the west. Strict zoning has preserved agricultural land and open space in Somis. Generally, new home sites must be 40 acres or larger. “Downtown” basically consists of the fire station, hardware store, market, vet and post office.

 

Our scenic roads are popular with classic car clubs and cyclists - both motor and Spandex driven. The steep, winding section of Balcom Canyon Road leading down into the Santa Clara River Valley www.heritagevalley.net  is the scene of the “King of the Hill” segment of the annual Amgen Tour of California cycle race www.amgentourofcalifornia.com .

 

Horticulture is big in this area. Most major California growers (and many, many smaller ones) have a facility within a 20-mile radius of Somis. Plant breeders such as Jackson & Perkins, Fides, Suntory, Seminis and Grolink are also nearby.

Somis enjoys a mild coastal influenced climate, which is why strawberries, raspberries, avocados and lemons do so well here. Communities with a similar climate include Brentwood, Lemon Heights, and California Heights in Long Beach.
